Exciting news astronomy fans: You can see one of the largest asteroids in the Solar System right now with the naked eye. Vesta, which is also sometimes classed as a protoplanet, is the second-largest object in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter after the dwarf planet Ceres.
Its previous close pass came in Maywhen it was a little bit further away. As noted by Sky and Telescopethe object reached its closest point to Earth — known as opposition — on June 19, a distance of However, it should remain visible to the naked eye until July Vesta can be spotted near the constellation of Sagittarius in the southeast sky when viewed from the Northern Hemisphere. From the Southern Hemisphere, it appears higher in the sky.

The movie is a surprisingly cerebral look at the future of war. The enemy are Islamic terrorists hiding in plain sight in East Africa. Other than the obligatory pot shots at some gung ho Yanks and ineffectual Brits.
The movie features some amazing but very real technology coming to the battlefield soon. A miniature surveillance drone the size of an insect. Surveillance software that recognises ear prints. And another drone that looks and flies like a humming bird.
Indeed, very slight spoiler alert, the whole movie can be seen as an extended debate on a famous problem in ethics, the Trolley Problem. There are a number of different formulations of the Trolley Problem.
In fact, how people perceive the ethics of the Trolley Problem depend on how it is formulated. The basic setup is a runaway trolley careering down a track. There are five people tied to the track. They are sure to die unless you throw a lever and direct the trolley onto a siding.
What do you do? One variant removes the siding and replaces it with a fat man, standing next to you on a bridge over the track. You can push the fat man off the bridge and thereby stop the trolley. Do you push him off or not? The movie plays with this problem, changing the setting several times, and testing our response to these changes. It is clear from news stories like this that the military in the UK, US, China and elsewhere are rushing to take advantage of what has been called the third revolution in warfare — lethal autonomous weapons — or as the media often call them, killer robots.
In the movie Eye in the Sky, the actors struggle to make ethical decisions with technology that is increasingly autonomous. Taking a line out of the movie, the decision making does not reduce itself to simply adding up numbers. There are many, often conflicting dimensions: ethical, legal, military, and political.Modern Talking - Rouge Et Noir
But what happens when, as is likely in the near future, there is no human any more in the loop? It is very likely that robots will be making simplistic and erroneous decisions. It was for these sort of reasons that I, and thousands of my colleagues working in Artificial Intelligence AI and Robotics, signed an open letter calling for offensive autonomous weapons to be banned.
And it is for these sort of reasons that I will be going to the UN in Geneva next month to talk to diplomats at the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons to persuade them to push forwards with their discussions on a ban.
There is only a small window of opportunity to get a ban in place before this moves from the big screen and comes to the conflict zones of our world.
But in reality, nine out of ten people being killed will not be the intended targets. Just as in this movie, there will lots of collateral damage, women, children and other people who just happen to be in the wrong place. As with other technologies that have been successfully banned, like blinding lasers and anti-personnel mines, we get to choose if killer robots are part of our future of not.

He was preparing to leave the Pentagon, and move over to the Federal Aviation Administration. His job was to begin executing the plan to allow those same surveillance drones to fly over American cities.
It directed the Departments of Defense and Transportation to " develop a plan for providing expanded access to the national airspace for unmanned aircraft systems of the Department of Defense. Poss was one of nearly two dozen ex-military officers who, starting inwere put into positions at the FAA to oversee drone integration research.
With little public scrutiny, the plan has been moving forward ever since. This plan has been enacted and expanded under Presidents and Congresses of both parties. Just as we should all be concerned about a President Trump tracking…well, everybody else. Along with civil liberties, a major concern must be safety. The military and the drone manufacturers, principally General Atomics, are arguing that the technology has advanced far enough that flying ft. We have one response: self-driving cars.
Self-driving cars present a technological problem that is an order of magnitude simpler than aircraft flying hundreds of miles per hour in three dimensions. Are we really comfortable with pilotless aircraft operating in the same airspace as the at 30, feet that is bringing your children home for Christmas? These drones have a troubled history of crashing and unfortunately, the process for determining whether these drones are now truly safe has been compromised by having the military, which wants this approval, largely in charge of the testing.
Which brings us to San Diego.
Last October, General Atomics announced that they would be flying their biggest, most advanced surveillance drone yet, the SkyGuardian, over the City of San Diego sometime this summer.
The stated purpose was to demonstrate potential commercial applications of large drones over American cities. But when General Atomics first began preparing for the flight, the goal was a very different one: Back inmilitary technology analysts were predicting that bydrones similar to those used in Afghanistan and Iraq would be hovering above US cities, relaying high-resolution video of the movement of every citizen to police departments and who knows who else.
When there was public pushback to this police department drone use — even a pro-industry reporter called the idea "dystopian" — General Atomics changed the purpose of the flight from providing data to the police to " mapping critical infrastructure" in the San Diego region. The FAA, which is responsible for granting permission to General Atomics, has kept the process secret.
When the Voice of San Diego asked for more information, the FAA refused on the grounds that this supposed commercial demonstration was actually "military. Amid the scrutiny, General Atomics quietly announced that the flight was canceled, but this is certain to be a small hiccup in their long-term plan.Wondering when you'll be able to see the planets at their best during ?
